Dr. Goy has Led International Research and Patient Empowerment Initiatives for the John Theurer Cancer Center as Deputy Director and Chief of Lymphoma Since 2005
HACKENSACK, NJ (April 27, 2011) – The John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center, the fourth largest cancer center by volume in the United States, has named Andre Goy, M.D., M.S., as its Chairman and Director. Dr. Goy will continue to serve as Chief of Lymphoma. The previous Chairman, Andrew Pecora, M.D., F.A.C.P, C.P.E., has assumed the position of Chief Innovations Officer and Professor and Vice President of Cancer Services at Hackensack University Medical Center.
“Dr. Goy is a highly motivated patient advocate and research pioneer. He has helped lead efforts to empower current and former patients and developed important programs for our cancer center, such as the Celebrating Life and Liberty cancer survivor event,” said Robert C. Garrett, president and chief executive officer at Hackensack University Medical Center. “His lymphoma expertise is internationally recognized and his research efforts span across today’s most novel treatment approaches, including stem cells, cellular therapy, immunology and new targeted therapies in lymphoma.
Dr. Goy will be responsible for further developing the John Theurer Cancer Center’s clinical and research capabilities to ensure that all patients receive excellent care and benefit from the center’s involvement in research and clinical trial initiatives. During his tenure at the John Theurer Cancer Center, Dr. Goy initiated and led the development of the John Theurer Cancer Center’s Tumor and Tissue Repository. He has also conducted pivotal clinical trials for several novel therapies in lymphoma including lenalidomide and bortezomib in mantle cell lymphoma. In December, he led a team of John Theurer Cancer Center researchers at the American Society of Hematology (ASH) annual meeting, where they presented 40 abstracts including 12 oral presentations in leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and stem cell transplantation research – twice as many studies compared to the previous year.
“Dr. Goy’s passion for patient care and important research in the field of blood cancers and stem cell transplantation over the last six years has been invaluable to our staff, patients and the greater community,” said Dr. Pecora. “He has maintained a strong clinical care focus, led the development of our Tumor and Tissue Repository and spearheaded pivotal clinical trials, all while shaping the design and infrastructure of our new comprehensive cancer care building. I look forward to working with Dr. Goy on future advancements in cancer innovation.”
Dr. Goy is widely known for his work showing the first ever evidence of activity of bortezomib in mantle cell lymphoma, and then as co-principal investigator on the PINNACLE trial, which led to the FDA approval of VELCADE® (bortezomib) for lymphoma patients. He brings years of experience to the John Theurer Cancer Center from renowned cancer institutions, such as M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston TX, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and the Assistance Publique University Hospitals, as well as the Pasteur Institute in Paris, France.
Recently, Dr. Goy and his colleagues moved the John Theurer Cancer Center’s 14 specialized divisions under one roof in a new 155,000 square-foot, comprehensive cancer care facility. Dr. Goy worked closely with interior design firm J. Brice International to create an environment that supports a holistic approach to treatment by focusing on the psychological and emotional needs as well as the physical needs of cancer patients. The new facility’s amenities include a business center, patient resource library, cooking studio, a roof deck garden terrace, as well as a gym and yoga facilities.
