The Neurological Oncology Division - The Brain & Spine Institute coordinates cutting edge clinical care and research for primary and metastatic brain tumors as well as the varied neurologic complications of cancer. The Institute is jointly led by neuro-oncologist Samuel A. Goldlust, M.D., who recently joined from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center where he served as Chief Neurology Fellow, leading neurosurgeon George Kaptain, M.D., who has subspecialty training and 10 years of experience in neuro-oncology and skull-base surgery and Dr. Mark S. Pascal  who has been a member of the Medical Staff for more than 20 years in the practice of hematology and oncology. The multidisciplinary team is comprised of some of the best neuro-oncology doctors in NJ, specializing in neuro-oncology, neurosurgery, radiation oncology, behavioral health, neuro-radiology, and oncology nursing.

SAMUEL GOLDLUST, M.D.

Samuel Goldlust, M.D. is a neuro-oncologist at the Neurological Oncology Division - The Brain & Spine Institute at John Theurer Cancer Center. Cancers and their treatments can cause neurologic symptoms, such as seizure, stroke, neuropathy, and cognitive effects, even without direct invasion of the nervous system. Dr. Goldlust specializes in the treatment of brain tumors and the neurological issues that arise from multi-modality cancer treatment and management.

Dr. Goldlust joined John Theurer Cancer Center team of neuro-oncology doctors in July 2011 from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center where he served as the Chief Fellow in the department of Neurology. GEORGE J. KAPTAIN, M.D.

George J. Kaptain, MD, co-chief of the Neurological Oncology Division - The Brain & Spine Institute at John Theurer Cancer Center is a board certified neurosurgeon who received both his medical degree and neurosurgical training from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia followed by sub-specialty training in neuro-oncology and skull-base surgery at the Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland.

Dr. Kaptain specializes in the surgical treatment of benign and malignant tumors of the brain, spine and skull base. He has published articles in peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Neurosurgery and Neurosurgery and has presented this work at the American Association of Neurosurgeons and the Congress of Neurosurgeons. He is actively engaged in clinical research and in teaching physicians in training from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and the St. Barnabas Medical System. Read full bio.


MARK S. PASCAL, M.D.

Director Emeritus and Medical Oncologist, Neurological Oncology Division - The Brain & Spine Institute at John Theurer Cancer Center

Hematologist/oncologist Mark S. Pascal, M.D., specializes in the treatment and management of many types of cancers and serious blood disorders, including cancers that affect the central nervous system. Chairman, Radiation Oncology 

Anthony Ingenito, M.D. leads one of the largest radiation oncology departments in New Jersey and serves as Co-Director of the Institute for Radiosurgery, an integral part of neuro-oncology comprised of multi-disciplinary team of radiosurgery specialists.

The John Theurer Cancer Center offers a wide-range of options to treat benign and malignant brain tumors using radiation therapy. This includes intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and image guided radiation therapy (IGRT), which uses sophisticated imaged guided systems to accurately target tumors in the brain, as well as stereotactic radiosurgery and fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy. Kangmin Daniel Lee, M.D. is a neurosurgeon at the Brain & Spine Tumor Institute of the John Theurer Cancer Center. Dr. Lee was recruited to join the Institute in 2012 for his expertise in minimally invasive neurosurgery and radiosurgery.
