Leukemia Division comprises a specialized team of professionals who are dedicated to preventing, diagnosing, treating, and managing all types of leukemia. These include acute and chronic myeloid leukemia, acute and chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and hairy cell leukemia.

STUART L. GOLDBERG, M.D
Division Chief
Hematologist/oncologist Stuart L. Goldberg, M.D., specializes in treating all types of leukemia and myelodysplastic syndromes with a variety of treatment modalities, including chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation. Dr. Goldberg led a team of researchers in the Division of Leukemia that participated in international clinical trials that were integral to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's approval of Gleevec and Sprycel, two revolutionary new targeted therapies to treat chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Gleevec, approved in 2001, and Sprycel, approved in 2006, work by turning off the abnormal protein in cancer cells produced by the Philadelphia chromosome that causes CML.Read full bio.
ANTHONY R. MATO, M.D., M.S.C.E.Director, Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Program
Anthony R. Mato, M.D., M.S. is Director, Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) Program at the John Theurer Cancer Center. He joined the Cancer Center in 2009, bringing a world-class education and more than eight years of experience in internal medicine, hematology and oncology.
Dr. Mato offers an impressive background in research, which includes in-depth studies on hematologic malignancies. His research interest lies in lymphocytic leukemia and small lymphocytic lymphoma. He has been extensively published in hematology and oncology journals such as Blood, Journal of Cellular Biochemistry, and Leukemia and Lymphoma. His research has been presented at international medical conferences, including the two of the largest in the world: the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology. Dr. Mato has been the lead researcher for many of these studies. Dr. Mato currently reviews abstracts for the American Society of Hematology, and manuscripts for Cancer Biology and Therapy, American Journal of Hematology, and Annals of Internal Medicine.
