Head and Neck Oncology Division comprises of a specialized team of professionals who are dedicated to preventing, diagnosing, treating, and managing cancers of the head and neck. These include cancers of the mouth, throat, tongue, thyroid, and sinuses, excluding those of the brain, eye, and scalp.

The head and neck cancer team brings together experts in otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat medicine), plastic and reconstructive surgery, medical oncology, maxillofacial surgery, dentistry, radiation oncology, radiology, and nursing. This specialized approach to treating head and neck cancers provides patients with the exact type of services they need to battle the disease and its physical, emotional, and social side effects.

Co-Chief of the Division of Head & Neck Oncology, Loren Godfrey, M.D., specializes in the treatment of head and neck cancers, gynecologic cancers, and breast cancer. He is skilled in the use of brachytherapy, in which implanted seeds or thin catheters are used to deliver radiation therapy directly into tumors. His clinical skills include intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)/image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) to treat gynecologic and head and neck cancers; both low-dose-rate and high-dose-rate gynecologic brachytherapy; and accelerated partial breast irradiation with the MammositeTM brachytherapy system. He is also experienced in interstitial brachytherapy for prostate cancer, endobronchial brachytherapy for lung cancer, intracranial brachytherapy for malignant brain tumors, intraoperative radiotherapy for abdomiopelvic cancers, and radioisotope therapies for bone metastases.

Brian Benson, M.D.

Brian Benson, M.D., a board certified Otolaryngologist - Head & Neck Surgeon, specializes in the surgical treatment of head and neck tumors including oral cavity, oropharyngeal (throat), laryngeal (voice box), salivary gland, sinonasal, thyroid, and skull base tumors, as well as, skin cancer.  He is one of a small number of head and neck surgeons able to offer minimally invasive, voice-preserving surgery for laryngeal tumors, and is one of 200 surgeons certified to perform Trans-Oral Robotic Surgery (TORS) for tumors of the pharynx and larynx.  He also performs reconstructive surgery for tumor defects and traumatic facial injuries.Read full bio.
