Scott Rowley, M.D.

Scott Rowley, M.D., Chief, Blood & Marrow Stem Cell Transplantation leads New Jersey's only Stem Cell Transplantation Program that is approved by the National Marrow Donor Program to perform all types of transplants: autologous (using the patient's own stem cells), allogeneic (using a donor's stem cells), and umbilical cord (using stem cells collected from umbilical cords).

Many of the advances in stem cell transplantation techniques used today were developed here, including reduced-intensity "mini" transplants for elderly and very sick patients, ways to purge marrow of cancerous cells, ways to expand the quantity of cells for transplantation, and improvements in curbing the immune response of a recipient to donated stem cells in order to prevent the incidence of graft-versus-host disease. There are currently more than 50 clinical trials under way at the program.

Dr. Rowley is one of the nation's foremost authorities on blood and marrow stem cell transplantation. At the John Theurer Cancer Center, he leads one of the 10 largest stem cell transplantation programs in the United States. Each year more than 300 transplants are performed at the John Theurer Cancer Center to treat patients with cancer and serious blood disorders. Prior to joining the John Theurer Cancer Center in 2000, Dr. Rowley was director of clinical services for blood and blood components and medical director of the clinical cryobiology laboratory at the prestigious Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. Click here for a list of John Theurer Cancer Center Transplant clinical trials.
