Each month the Maureen Fund for Ovarian Cancer, a community outreach program of John Theurer Cancer Center at HackensackUMC, hosts a free “Lunch and Learn” seminar to educate the community about the latest topics in women’s health.

This month’s event will take place on Thursday, April 26 from 11:30am-1:00pm. Cindy Parnes, MD, Medical Director of the New Jersey Women’s Wellness Center will host the discussion, which will focus on sex hormones in transition and how menopause can affect women’s overall health. Patients, caregivers, Hackensack University Medical Center staff and members of the community are all encouraged to attend.

HackensackUMC recently received a generous donation of $20,336 from Skanska USA, of Parsippany, NJ.  This contribution represents the proceeds from the first annual Dan Wurzburg Memorial Golf Outing.  Mr. Wurzburg, who passed away in January of 2011, was a patient of Dr. David Siegel and an employee of Skanska for 19 years.  The proceeds will benefit the Multiple Myeloma Fund through the HackensackUMC Foundation, which is used to support a number of initiatives.

John Theurer Cancer Center has named Martin Gutierrez, M.D., as Director of it’s Drug Discovery/Phase I Unit. Dr. Gutierrez’s appointment is part of an ongoing effort by John Theurer Cancer Center to bolster its critical Phase I research program, which studies cancer treatments in the earliest stage of human trials. This initiative allows patients to have very early access to novel and promising treatments. The center currently has 15 active Phase I studies underway and plans to double the program by the end of the year.

For its ninth consecutive year, Hackensack University Medical Center was an instrumental component to the success of the Daily News Free PSA Testing run throughout New York City and Northern New Jersey in the month of June, coinciding with Father’s Day and Prostate Cancer Awareness Week.  The PSA test checks for prostate specific antigen, a protein in the blood that comes from the prostate; a higher PSA level can indicate a threat of cancer.

Researchers Sequence Multiple Myeloma Genome in Landmark Nature Study

Using new genome sequencing technologies, researchers from the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center joined colleagues from 20 major North American research institutions to publish the first complete genomic portrait of multiple myeloma, a highly aggressive blood cancer.  Findings from the study point to new directions for potential myelmoa therapies, and begin to unlock the mysteries of what causes this devastating malignancy.  The paper will be published in the March 24, 2011 issue of Nature.

Thea Friedman, M.D., associate scientist and director of oncology basic research at the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center was recently awarded a National Institutes of Health-National Cancer Institute (NIH-NCI)  RO1 research grant to improve allogeneic blood and marrow transplantation for multiple myeloma patients.  The grant provides $2 million in funding over the next five years.

The Maureen Fund for Ovarian Cancer, a section of the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) recently hosted its third annual gift basket auction on Tuesday, November 30, in the Second Street Café corridor. Thanks to the generous contributions of donors, it was a very successful fundraising event. More than $3,600 was raised in one day, all going directly to the Maureen Fund’s Community Educational Outreach Program.

Study Makes Exciting Progress in Elucidating the Mechanisms of Bortezomib in Lymphoma

A new study by researchers from the John Theurer Cancer Center sheds light on how bortezomib (VELCADE®), the first in a new class of cancer drugs known as proteasome inhibitors, works in mantle cell lymphoma. The study also provides preliminary evidence for which patients might benefit most from bortezomib. Additionally, researchers demonstrate that biomarkers might help guide the selection of patients for specific clinical trials and speed-up the development of targeted cancer drugs. Drug in New Class of Targeted Therapies Shows Early Promise Against Blood-Related Cancers

A Phase I clinical trial of SNS-032, one of the first in a new class of drugs that inhibit cyclin-dependent kinases, demonstrated the drug’s safety and potential clinical action against advanced chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Cyclin-dependent kinases are enzymatic proteins that are integrally involved in cellular metabolism, renewal and signaling, and are thought to play key roles in the growth of cancers. The drug did not demonstrate any clinical effect against advanced multiple myeloma, although researchers hope it might still prove to have some benefit against this blood cancer as part of combination therapy. MDS, a Blood Cancer, Strikes Nearly Five Times More Americans Than Previously Thought

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) – a group of serious blood cancers – are nearly five times more common in seniors than previously thought, according to a new study by Stuart Goldberg, M.D., Chief, Leukemia, John Theurer Cancer Center. The study also showed for the first time that MDS patients are at much higher risk for heart attack, diabetes and other serious complications than other seniors, and that their health care costs are far higher.
