Worthy White Foods

Worthy White Foods

For many years as I counseled patients about eating healthy, whether for heart disease, diabetes, cancer, or general good health. I often heard people say that they were told not to eat any “white” foods.  Surely we all know that foods of deep intense color are filled with lots of nutritional benefits.  After all, the nutrients are what give the food its color in the first place.  But does that mean that ALL foods that are not colorful have no nutrition?  Absolutely not!

First and foremost we recommend a plant-based diet with lots of fruits, vegetables, and grains.  Animal food should be limited and when included, should be lean. … Read More >

Glass Half Full

Glass Half Full

We all face challenges in our lives, but it’s how we deal with them that defines us.  Whether our troubles are health-related, financial, or linked to relationships or loss, every one of us encounters difficulties.  I’ve been told that I have a positive attitude towards life and have been asked from where I derive my spirit and how I view my glass as half full.

Thank You

Thank You

The week of May 6th was national Employee Appreciation Week.  The caring and hard work I see everyday at our cancer center makes me believe that this is one of the most important weeks of the year.  It is a time when we can all take a moment to recognize our staff for their extraordinary efforts.

As I always say, we could never accomplish what we have done so far without their tireless dedication.  The contributions of each nurse, researcher, laboratory professional, psychosocial expert, nutritionist, pharmacist, patient navigator, medical assistant, and administrative assistant have helped us become one of the nation’s top 50 cancer centers.

Party Perfect

Party Perfect

Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and let’s face it, holidays happen all year long and we’re always looking for something interesting and tasty to serve to the people we care about.  What better time to treat your party guests to some new hors d’oeuvres while showing off your culinary skills.  In addition to selecting items that were uncommon, the real challenge was to make sure the items prepared were healthy, as this is the primary goal in the cooking studio.

Borrowing from Asian food preparation, wonton skins were formed into cups to be used as containers or holders for a variation on chicken salad. Instead of deep fat frying the… Read More >

100 Volunteers in a Day to Finish the Fight

100 Volunteers in a Day to Finish the Fight

An amazing thing happened on Friday April 19th, the final day of enrollment for the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) taking place in Bergen County in partnership with Hackensack University Medical Center and Holy Name Medical Center.  We invited employees and community members to be a part of history and change the course of cancer for future generations…and they answered, coming out in record numbers.

On Friday April 19th alone, in honor of the American Cancer Society’s 100th birthday this year, Hackensack University Medical Center enrolled 100 volunteers to help finish the fight.  That’s in addition to the 94… Read More >
